Green packaging: an eco-friendly approach to saving packaging costs
With rising costs and increasing depletion of nature reserves, the need for time is to maximize the reuse of materials, especially from non-renewable resources. Packaging materials are used quite often due to the fact that almost all business operations related to the transportation of goods require different packaging solutions to ensure the safety and quality of the contents stored/transported. Will be done. Is required. Manufacturers are focused on recycling boxes and other packaging materials, reducing the overall costs associated with them and achieving adequate sustainability in the process.
Show the benefits of recycling in your statistics
Leading proponents of cardboard recycling claim that recycling single cardboard can save up to 25% of the total energy required to create new cardboard. If you still can’t convince yourself to start recycling, this can help. For every ton of recycled cardboard, you can easily save up to 3-9 cubic yards of space used as a landfill. Such efforts can greatly help ensure the sustainability of the environment by maximizing the use of resources. Recycling cardboard boxes is much better and more cost-effective than cutting wood to make unused cardboard material.
One of the reasons for ensuring the recycling of manufacturing packaging materials such as cardboard boxes and sheets is that manufacturing unused products requires additional energy and effort, apart from key resources. .. The sad news is that most packaging materials are disposed of as waste or waste, making it even more difficult to classify for further disposal. Over the years, the amount of packaging material discarded has increased, posing a serious threat to environmental sustainability. Not all paper products have the same result when recycled because they have a particular grade or quality to which applicable recycling methods are applied to maintain as much quality as possible. It’s important to understand.
Cardboard recycling process:
The corrugated board recycling process is extensive and requires various processing steps to reach the final result. Before considering recycling as an option, it is important to check the packaging for possible contamination and for unwanted ingredients such as food, oil and metal foil. It is best to maintain a separate disposal unit for collecting packaging materials so as not to waste time sorting relatively clean materials.
The actual recycling process involves the following steps:
- The collected material is categorized according to its type and compressed with a hydraulic press. These compressed materials are veiled for convenient storage and easy transportation.
- In a paper mill, the veil breaks and is placed in a paper that uses water to make pulp (a mixture of fibre and water).
- If the pulp is inside the paper, use a chain or rope to remove contaminants from the pulp. Common contaminants removed in this process include metal strips/bands, plastic tapes, and other related contaminants.
- Pulp is further cleaned by passing it through a series of cyclones, tanks, towers and other equipment. After cleaning, the pulp is sent to a paper machine.
- The next step is to separate the water from the pulp. Pulp is now very diluted and contains only fibre. Moisture removal is achieved by pouring pulp onto a movable screen with rollers that push the fibre sheet and drain the water.
- The continuous fibres formed as a result of water removal are wrapped around a dry surface to remove water that may have been retained in the previous step.
- When completely dry, wind the fibre sheet onto a huge spool into a roll of approximately 10-60 tonnes.
- When the final stage is successfully completed, the actual recycling process is definitely complete. Sheets created as a result of the recycling process are sent to the packaging manufacturer for further processing of the material.
Think Before Recycling-Not all packaging materials can be recycled
Packing materials such as boxes and sheets usually contain additional components such as tapes, stickers, metal bands and labels. These are pollutants but can be removed at the recycling centre. However, if the cardboard box is also contaminated with grease or oily substances, it is very difficult to remove it from the pulp during recycling, which exceeds the possibility of recycling. Other corrugated cardboard products that are not suitable for recycling include boxes coated with wax or resin to increase their strength when used for liquid storage. These products are not completely recyclable, even though the base composite is made of paper.
Cost-Benefit Aspects-Does Cardboard Recycling Really Save Costs?
While it is good to evaluate the cost-benefit of using a particular packaging material based on its recyclability, it is best to consider the actual use of the product and its subsequent end-use. You need to check how many times the product has been recycled. In today’s competitive market, there is fierce competition among packaging box manufacturers for retaining as much virgin fibre as possible. Virgin fibre is more durable and stronger than processed fibre.
Most manufacturers prefer to offer packaging materials made with varying degrees of mixing ratio (mixture of virgin and recycled fibres) that directly affect prices. One of the reasons for the widespread preference for virgin fibre packaging materials is their high aesthetic and functional value compared to recycled materials that do not fully meet the standards. From this point of view, if the purpose of the cardboard box is to store the liquid, there is little room to recycle it. Therefore, it is necessary to consider every aspect of the packaging material, from the purpose of the packaging material to its end application and recyclability, and to accurately estimate the cost savings it will bring.
